Re: Grand Scale

I agree with redheadelizabeth too but would like to add that I believe there is a glimmer of hope visible here and there. I make an occasional trip to Gunnison Beach, the clothing optional beach at Sandy Hook New Jersey. Every time I go there I'm just amazed by the number of people sunbathing topfree or nude. Thousands, up to five thousand in a weekend. Most are local, within driving distance. I would estimate that at least 45 percent of the people (probably a higher percentage) are women. This suggests that there are more women interested in topfreedom in NJ than anyone would ever expect who hasn't been to Gunnison. They naturally wish they had the freedom to shed their top at the beach of their choice too. Now thinking out loud and speculating here, but it would be interesting if the park service ever closed Gunnison to nudity. I hate to talk about that as it is the fear of many. But if it ever happened, then suddenly all these women would have to keep their tops on or find another beach. The only other beaches where topfreedom is known to be totally legal are a long drive from Gunnison. Such an event could be the catalyst that helps to make something happen with topfreedom in NJ. I would have to think that many women would respond and put up a fight for more legality in NJ.

Gunnison Beach is an enormous revenue source for the National Seashore, so I would think that fears that it would be closed are foolish. If problems with law enforcement develop, such as too much open sex or other problems, the freedom there could change. I don't expect this to happen.

I have been to Gunnison many times. Lewdness and drug use are not tolerated. You don't even see couples applying suntan lotion to each other's sexual areas very often, and then quite discreetly. The rangers patrol frequently. I've twice seen them taking people away in plastic handcuffs. They have no sense of humor whatever. Yes, there are a lot of women and most are fully nude, but some wear a thong. The guys are almost always fully nude. Very few thongs. There are often children. They are usually nude, but not always. They don't even seem to notice. There is one guy who wears a feather through his sex organ, which I think is a bit inappopriate, but the rangers don't bother him. There is some nipple jewelry, but not as much as there used to be. There are often a few guys that walk the beach fully dressed, and sometimes some teenagers.
Food and beer is available. Last year, some of the area was cordoned off because of nesting. It is a long hot walk to the water. A lot of people use carts. If you don't have one, don't take a heavy cooler. Don't leave your towel or belongings near the water and take a walk. The tide can come up quite quickly. If you think you will go four times or more durng the summer, get a $50 unlimited parking pass. It's transferable, too.

I think I understand what SandNSunLuver41 was saying. He was not suggesting or expecting that Gunnison would ever close, but just speculating that IF Gunnison or any well-attended CO beach were to close, then the anger of the women could trigger the kind of peaceful civil disobedience on other beaches or in parks that resulted in the "New York 12" changing New York into a legal topfree state in 1987. Historically, it's usually this kind of opposition to injustice that ultimately makes for societal change. Unfortunately, it also usually takes the courage of a few to be arrested, tried, convicted, re-tried on appeal, convicted, and re-tried in a state's Supreme Court (the case with New York).

wow, that beach sounds like a great place to go for the weekend. I wish there was a beach like that here in north Georgia...but sadly anything that could be, would be, or is CO is either not here or it would take a miracle to find...I'm thinking its the former, as far as beaches go anyway. the resorts(which are as far as i know the only place to be topfree) are completely hidden from the world...i mean there are people that have lived in commerce their whole lives but they don't know bell acres resort is within 5 miles, they have no idea that its even there.

I remember that when Bell Acres initially applied for a permit some KKK members in full regalia turned out to opposes it. I was told by one of the founders that the effect of that was to increase their support among the respectable locals.
