Re: The 'burkini'
the link doesn't work for me, but after a quick google search i found some pictures and an article.
http://news.rediff.com/report/2009/aug/13/burkini-creates-chaos-in-france.htm
might be the same article you posted. i try to respect other peoples' cultures, no matter how unpractical they are. it's doesn't make much sense as a swimsuit, but i don't see how she was breaking any rules. she should be allowed to wear it.

Re: The 'burkini'
The pictures are misleading as they are shown on the beach where anyone can wear what they want. The 'burkini' isn't much different in appearance from what most surfers wear. The 'rules' in question relate to wearing it in a swimming pool and even then, if it were a 'second-skin' type lycra, not many people would object.

Re: The 'burkini'
I read the New York Times article on this matter. According to the article the rules for swimwear in pools would not allow men to wear the board shorts and similar trunks that most men wear in the US. The article said that men must wear "form-fitting briefs."
When I swam in a pool in Paris in 1986 (Piscine Deligny, which later fell into the Seine) I wore a speedo. There was a stand at the pool selling g-strings, described as "un petit rien en defaut de rien" (a little nothing in default of nothing).

Re: The 'burkini'
Oh my, that is very unattractive beachwear! While Muslim culture and the rules in France are the topic here, one thing impresses me considerably about the burkini beachwear:
Many Muslim women in the middle east apparently have greatly reduced freedoms (compared to the Euro and Western societies). So this swimwear must be such a "free" feeling to Muslim women whose local cultures require them to cover their body and face with burkas when in out in public.
Perhaps they will form a group similar to this one called "face-free" and start a Muslim female liberation movement? Maybe the "burkini" is a small but significant step for them. I Hope so.
