Ted Kennedy: A True Champion of Women's Rights
Simply stated Ted believed in equal rights and he fought for it. If all of our politicians thought and fought like Ted did, we might have abundant topfree rights in the United States like it should be. Please consider taking a little time this weekend to remember Ted and the causes he fought for. Thank you.

Re: Ted Kennedy: A True Champion of Women's Rights
He was sometimes irresponsible in his personal life, but he was an extremely effective proponent of the causes in which he believed. Once in a while he was over the top, as in his comments on Judge Bork, but I agreed with at least 90% of what he did. Too bad he is not around to fight to give Americans a health care system at least as good as those in other modern industrial democracies. When I was young the US had the best health statistics in the world. Now among modern industrial democracies we are dead last. And we won World War II, but we are way behind Japan, which is first at half our per capita cost.

There a reason Japan has half the cost: fewer lawyers. For every 320 Americans there is a lawyer — indeed, with 799,960 lawyers among a population of 255,600,000, America may have the highest proportion of lawyers per capita in the world. in Japan 8,195 Japanese per lawyer.

Re: Ted Kennedy: A True Champion of Women's Rights
Forgive me, but I feel he was a champion of women's rights because he felt guilty about murdering Mary Jo Kopechne in 1970!

Re: Ted Kennedy: A True Champion of Women's Rights
I'm sorry, but as far as I'm concerned,Ted Kennedy was more of a misogynist that a champion of women's rights.
Not only Mary Jo Kopechne comes to mind, but also the times when a Kennedy relative was charged with raping a woman in Florida, Teddy came to his defense.
As well, when another was eventually charged with murdering a female neighbour who was a minor at the time, Teddy was there for the relative.
He tried to follow his father,Joe, and his brother Jack, when it came to womanizing, which led to his divorce from his first wife,Joan.
Not what I'd call a champion of women's rights.
John

I agree that there are problems with malpractice suits, but their contribution to medical costs is at most several percent. Resulting defensive medicine undoubtedly adds a bit more, but the total contribution to the cost problem is small. I think our real problems are excessive overhead caused by insurance companies and our system of rewarding doctors every time they do something to a patient. If there were fixed payments for treating conditions, the economic motivations of doctors would be different.

Re: Ted Kennedy: A True Champion of Women's Rights
Actually Meredith, I'm a former insurance Geek and what I remember from those days are the premiums paid by Drs with specialties like OB/Gyn, Plastic Surgery & Orthopedics, also any surgeon, run to 7 figures. Plus they carry a huge deductible, so it is a significant factor in medical costs.
Hospitals are virtually uninsurable and many have gone to self-insurance. Buying only defense coverage.
Sorry for going off-topic

Re: Ted Kennedy: A True Champion of Women's Rights
The malpractice problem has two sides. There are ridiculous jury awards for bad outcomes that are essentially not the doctor's fault, but I believe, and have frequently read, that most malpractice is never challenged, and, in fact, frequently is never caught by patients.
In response to the malpractice problem a system was set up here in Maine whereby malpractice charges are put before a panel, one of the three members of which is a doctor, and this panel makes a judgment. If the panel's decision is unanimous then that fact can be used in court if a suit is brought. This system has greatly reduced to number of suits and the size of malpractice awards.

Actually quite often there are limits that a jury can award a victim thus preventing many of the outrageous awards. Many are surprised by what their limb is worth to a court.
My brother is currently involved in a suit against a well known entity which the Federal government has determined there is high cause for the suit. If the jury awards him more than the maximum amount allowed, their award will be over turned. Furthermore, the jury is NOT told what the max they can award.
Makes no sense to me. I have first hand knowledge with what I am posting her.
