Be thou for the people

I hear a LOT of people talk about how this country could be better, so lets bring it all into one place. What do YOU think would make our great nation better? Why? And most importantly what have you done to make it happen or why haven't you tried to make it happen?

I work 4 days a week in an animal shelter helping to rescue animals who have been dumped by families who lost their jobs and homes and couldn't afford to keep them. It's not much but it's what I'm good at.

OKAY since you asked I'll pass along my feelings about this.

Domestically we've come a long way in the last forty to fifty years. In 1960 racial and other biases abounded and segregation was everywhere. I need not remind anyone of how women were treated. There were no handicapped parking spaces. Handicapped people were largely confined to their residences and nobody thought much about them. In 1960 there was no Medicare program; little was done to assist the aged. We can be proud of the way our thinking has changed over time and that our society has been able to adjust and make many improvements.

But along the way we've had to deal with many people who tried to slow some of the progress and turn the clock back to the way some things were in the past. The people who do this are called conservatives.

Today our society still has a dark side and there are many things that still need correction. It is simply disgusting, for example, that so many people cannot see the difference between a mother nursing her baby and an obscene sex act being performed in public. Feelings against gay people still abound. There is little topfreedom here while it is legal in most other developed countries. Again it is conservative minded politicians and the conservative way of thinking that inhibits change from taking place.

Many conservatives are motivated by strong religious beliefs and they try their hardest to entrench the laws of their religion into the laws of the government and force them on everybody. I try to help by voting against right wing conservative politicians in every election and by supporting organizations such as Americans United For Separation of Church and State, National Organization for Women, and American Civil Liberties Union.

We can take pride in the progress that our society has made over time. But it hurts me to even think about the future change in America if just one or two liberal Supreme Court justices are replaced by conservatives. I've followed another topic on this board - the loss of San Onofre as a clothing optional beach. We can consider it's loss to be a "warning shot" about what happens when zealots have their way and force their own personal conservative beliefs on everyone.

To make this country truly the "Land Of The Free" women must be able to remove their tops where men can. Until that happens, women have fewer rights and privileges than a 3 year old child.
For women to be truly equal to men, they must be required to register for the draft the same as any male. Then they will be equal, or better.

I think it would be best to keep blatant political posturing out of this discussion. Liberals are just as guilty as conservatives when it comes to inhibiting freedom; I could easily list hundreds of examples, more than can fit into this space, thats for sure!

What have the ACLU, Americans United for Church and State, or the liberal dominated Supreme Court ever done for topfreedom? Not much. More progress has been made locally; and topfreedom is legal in states like Ohio (not known for its liberalism), but not Connecticut (a reliable blue state) [2 states I have lived in]. Regardless of political position, there are people who are basically content to "live and let live", and those who feel the need to impose their views on everybody else. Religious extremists are but one small example, and given the current madness in Washington, obviously an insignificant example. Self-righteousness knows no politcal boundaries.

The language of political discourse is such that people have come to associate conservative or liberal with negative connotations. This association with the negative is no longer valuable. To me, the discourse has been over run by the religious right. It doesn't seem to matter what religion one examines, the religious right is always an extremist religion when it comes to restricting rights to others. Our political discourse (now beginning in Canada and influenced by the U.S.) is such that those on God's right are the chosen whereas those who have any type of differing opinion(s) are wrong.
I wish we could use our intellect and realize that there is no God, Goddess, Gods, or creator dung beetle. There is just us, and we better get along...soon...and take care of the planet.

While I agree with the beliefs of B, I am sure that a lot of others here do not. I would urge the religious believers (and any nonbelievers inclined toward intolerance) to show restraint in having the government adopt policies based on your particular beliefs on religious issues. After all, there is the practical necessity of having Americans with widely varying views get along without being at each others' throats. I hope the era of religious-right ascendancy in the Republican Party ends ASAP, because we need a reasonable opposition party.

The bottom line is, if women's bare breasts offend you, avert your eyes. We can't be dictated to by anyone's offended feelings. Also, PC people on the left, please take note.

I think nudity should be premitted in every state and there should be areas in state parks where nudity is legal.
