Re: california beachs
Nikki, you look great.
The best thonging beach in the LA area is Venice beach. You can thong anywhere, but most thongers (who are not tourists anyway) seem go to the area between the Galleon lifeguard tower (just south of the Washington Street pier) and Marina Del Rey.
Sometimes you will see a fair number of fellow thongers on the beach, some topless too, and sometimes not. Regardless, you can comfortably thong anywhere on Venice and Santa Monica beaches. The police beach patrols drive by frequently, don't bother those in minimal swimwear or topless, and have the added benefit of keeping the lurkers away.
When we had the three day weekend in January, I checked the weather in Venice (75-80 deg) and decided to drive down and spend a few days on the beach. I have never been to the beach in January in California before. It was perfect. Warm, the sun was not very intense so I only got some very light tan lines. Beach was not crowded, but not empty either. By about 4:00 it usually cooled off enough, that it was time to head over to Baja Cantina for a margarita or two.
There are some posts about Venice beach on this site.
In the San Francisco Bay area, Baker's Beach in SF and Grey Whale Cove state beach south of Pacifica are the best places to thong or go topless. The beach weather up here is very iffy though in the summer. It can be hot and sunny a mile from the coast, and completly fogged in and freezing at the beach. You never know. Usually when there is a hot weekday, if you can escape to the beach you do it, because a day or two later the fog will be back.
Mark Twain was reputed to have said (he didn't) that "the coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco". Maybe Twain didn't say it, but it's true.
Have fun

Re: california beachs
Spring finally arrived last weekend in Northern California. After a cold start to the week (everything is relative I guess compared to other areas), on Saturday morning there was bright sunshine and temps in the mid 70’s early morning. I looked like it would be a great beach day. I decided to go to the morning spin class at the gym, and then head over to the coast afterwards. By noon when I got on the road for the coast temps were in the mid 80’s. As I approached the SF Bay Bridge, San Francisco Bay was sparkling, the wind was calm and there were boats everywhere out on the water. As I looked up towards the Golden Gate Bridge, I was shocked to see that it was completely shrouded in dense fog. Typical San Francisco summer weather; beautiful inland and cold and foggy at the beach.
By this time, I didn’t feel like turning around and I was really looking forward to reading a new book, and starting to work on a tan. I decided to head for Mission Dolores Park in San Francisco instead of the beach and check it out. I had been by the park during the fall last year once and there had been quite a large number of people sunbathing on the grass. I had noticed a few people then who were wearing thongs or booty suits on the girls, but not very many. San Francisco is a pretty liberal city, which is either good or bad depending on your point of view I guess.
I had intended to go to the beach and just wear a g-string there, but I thought this might be a little extreme for a city park, and decided to just wear a thong instead. Usually I will wear running shorts over my suit when going to a new place for the first time in case I don’t feel comfortable, but this time I just wore regular shorts so it would be tanning in a thong or not tanning at all.
I found an open spot on the grass and spread out the towel. There were a lot of people around, including up on the hill just above the sunning area, but it wasn’t real crowded. Soon I removed the shorts and was only wearing my thong. I lay there for a while; the sun was bright and warm and soon I fell asleep. I woke up about a half hour or 45 minutes later and I was surprised. The sunning area had really filled up and it was almost elbow to elbow. All told there must have been a couple of thousand people in the park as you looked around.
Even though I was the only one wearing a thong that I could see among all of the sun bathers, no one seemed to mind at all. It was an awesome day at the park. Some of the local entrepreneurs were making their way through the crowds selling beer, “special” brownies and “special” cookies. I didn’t buy any, but this being San Francisco, I can imagine what was “special’ about them. I stayed for about 4 hours before leaving for home.
Sunday morning was a repeat of Saturday, clear and warm and going to be hot. This time I checked the satellite picture to see if it was fogged in at the coast. The coast was clear! Packed up and headed for Baker Beach in San Francisco. Perfect day there too. By the time I got there at about 11:30 all of the parking lots were full and you had to hunt for street parking. It was a fair walk to get to the beach from where I had to park. Weather was perfect. Spent the day in a “g”. Had to go in the ocean a few times to cool off and despite the hot day, the water was freezing. I got a good start on my tan and am only slightly burned in a couple of spots the sun tan lotion missed. Perfect way to start the summer. Hope all of you can start to enjoy summer soon also.

Re: california beachs
A couple weeks ago I also had the pleasure of going to Baker Beach in San Francisco, CA. First off, let me just say that the weather was amazing for San Francisco. No fog, perfectly clear day, and about 80 degrees. I parked at the lot there and immediately headed down to the beach. For those of you who don't know, Baker Beach is part textile and part nude. The nudes tend to congregate on the right side of the parking lot if you're facing the water. Being a die hard thonger, I set up right about in the middle where the crowd was changing from clothed to nude. Shortly after I set up and stripped down to my thong, two young women set up about 10 yards away from me. One was topless and the other in a standard bikini. Later on in the morning I went for a dip and they came in shortly after me. We made a little small talk, just talking about how refreshing the water was but nothing more. Nothing was said about my thong.
I saw several other women in thongs that day but no men. For the most part they were either in shorts or nude. I took several walks up and down the length of the beach that day and my thong was a complete non-issue. Obviously in the nude section it was no problem, but I walked all the way back to the parking lot (through the textile section) to use the porta-potty couple times. The second time there was a line. So there I stood amongst 4 or 5 others waiting our turn. Nothing was said about my attire and I felt completely at ease standing there in my thong.
Later on in the day I decided I wanted to have my picture taken with the Golden Gate in the background (Baker Beach has one of the most breathtaking views of the Golden Gate). I asked a mature couple, he was nude, she in just a g-string, to take my picture. She took a few shots of me (I will try to post them on my flickr, TBSJ_03) and then we all got to chatting for about 15 minutes about the local nude beaches and such. They were really nice people. One thing that I have found is that people with a more relaxed attitude on showing skin are some of the friendliest people you'll meet.
Anyways, I ended up staying until about 7:00 pm. It was a great way to refresh and sharpen my tanline that had faded from when I was in LA last summer. I whole-heartedly recommend Baker Beach to anyone. Nudist, thonger, or just your regular beach-goer.

Re: california beachs
I've been to Baker a few times over the past decade and its clientele is quite tolerant (and you were quite lucky to find parking spot unless you were there early in the day!). As an aside, if you don't want to walk all the way to the portables, on the nude side there is a designated area next to a cliff where peeing is acceptable for both men and women (On one trip I encountered a woman standing there peeing and it helped inspire me to learn how to do it that way when necessary. )

Re: california beachs
Thanks for the tip Elizabeth. I'm probably still more comfortable using the portables but it's good to know. And yes, I arrived there just a little after 10:00 am. Throughout the day when I walked back to the parking lot it was pretty packed. I've heard that parking is one of the difficulties of Baker Beach so I'm definitely glad I got an early start .
