Thongs for ladies, bikinis for men
I was thinking about this recently. It's exceedingly rare to see a woman in the US wearing a thong on a beach. (In the conservative northeast anyway) It's also exceedingly rare to see a man in a bikini in much the same way. Is it as daring for a woman to wear a thong swimsuit to the beach as it is for a man to wear a speedo/bikini swimsuit? Which is more daring?

Re: Thongs for ladies, bikinis for men
I (79-year-old male) always wear a speedo-style suit when I can't be nude. Aside from one obnoxious remark I once heard from a middle-aged man I have never been aware of any adverse reaction.

Look at what the woman in the foreground is wearing, and look at the little boy in the background. Who needs more liberation?

Re: Thongs for ladies, bikinis for men
@Slomo
Definetely the boy in the background. To try an answer on the questions of @njbikini:
From my own experiences I think I can say that in the western countries thongs for females are a special problem of the U.S. - nowhere else I found it a problem to wear a thong bottom and to go topless at the beach - not in the Carribean, not in the Mediterranean, not in Middle Europe - simply nowhere else. But to add this, too: When I was in the U.S. it was for me more the problem to find the right spot and to get rid of the sh.t top than to show some skin of my bum - even in North Carolina...
In my opinion it´s another matter with males who´re wearing narrow and short swimsuits, caused not only from formal regulations but much more by the fashion and the trend of male body culture: Since some years such ugly knee-long shorts as in the pic Slomo posted are the trendy male-"swimsuits". Especially boys and young males must be aware to be stigmatized by their friends as "gay" if they´re wearing something smaller than that - and "gay" is today unfortunately something like the worst insult you can give to a young male. I saw not long ago really at a public swimming pool a young male showering and swimming in ankle-long trousers, wearing underwear, too - and a t-shirt!!! And that in Germany and not in Texas!!! ARRRGGGHHH!!! I don´t know where this should lead to - but I know that the laws are not the main reason for it - not in Europe and not in America!
Love,
yours Nicci

Re: Thongs for ladies, bikinis for men
In that particular situation the woman had more freedom than the boy but that was a special case for those of us in most of the USA. If I were to go down to the pool at my apt dressed like her I'd be arrested and taken to jail for indecent exposure. If a male were to be dressed like her he'd get some sideways glances and possibly someone might call him a "fag."
BTW it does seem that thong acceptance and speedo acceptance do tend to go hand in hand. I talked about my Brazilian neighbors (thonged girl & speedo boy) and my visit to Miami, FL where thong girls and men in speedos are common.

Re: Thongs for ladies, bikinis for men
Several years ago Speedo type swimwear was worn by the majority of guys in Australia. They are still relatively common amongst the over 40s and the surf lifesaving clubs. Thongs were never worn to the same extent by the girls.
Even now I'll wear my 25mm side cossie virtually all day at any resort (except when I can wear a g-string round the pool!) and may add a T shirt if ducking down the shops. I'll also wear them if cycling on bike paths, though I would wear something with more hip protection in traffic.
I suspect a female could not get away with any of the above in a thong, though I would love to meet a lady with the confidence to try!
Cheers,
Graeme

Re: Thongs for ladies, bikinis for men
I can remember, too, that some years ago Speedo´s were common in Europe - the swimshorts fashion started only at the end of the 90ies. And it was also not so uncommon to wear thongs as a male.
Today it seems to me that there´s a development into two different directions: one is the XXL-fashion who´s in my observation still the major one. On the other side nude bathing is really growing up for males and a - small - minority starts also to wear very tiny swimsuits like strings or even g-strings which made shaving necessary to wear them - and it also difficult to stay inside of them even without an erection.
So maybe (hopefully?) there´s a shift in the fashion trend - I think we will know more in the next years. For me personally, I have never made it a secret that I like the tight panties and wear them at the beach and also at public swimming pools.

Re: Thongs for ladies, bikinis for men
On a recent holiday in the Canary Islands, I walked the whole length of a beach in a male bikini without drawing any obvious comments or staring. I also walked along a promendae of cafes and shops in the same beachwear to buy some sweets for my wife and again my bikini drew no adverse comments or looks from those in the cafes. I even went into a shop to buy the sweets and caused no surprise.
Toplessness is still common in the Canaries although at a quiet time of the year, thongs were relatively rare even for women. I agree that male bikinis are now genrally accepted by everyone but am not so sure about thongs. Although I took some thongs on holiday, I did not this time wear them on the beach although they got plenty of use on our apartment balcony but more than ever I was able to be nude with my wife's approval. She even suggested that she might revert to bikinis from one piece costumes in future.

Re: Thongs for ladies, bikinis for men
Unfortunately, in the Canary Islands, bikinis for men may be common, but in the US...not at all. I'm still waiting for that fashion pendulum to swing in our direction!

Nevertheless, I wear them whenever I can't be nude.
