Re: New Jersey and Thong Bikinis
Any NJ thongers or small swimwear-wearers? I'd love to hear stories and discuss locations.
Dissapointing...last summer I had no chance to wear my speedo suit to the beach. I'll be making a comeback this summer!

Re: New Jersey and Thong Bikinis
I have worn my thing on the bayside beaches at Sandy Hook with no problems (when the flies were too bad on the ocean side). Also in the hotel pool I often stayed at. I haven't tried it at any other Jersey beaches.

Which hotel do you stay at near Sandy Hook?

Re: New Jersey and Thong Bikinis
I've never had a problem with a thong in NJ. Or topless either, for that matter, though NJ isn't as liberated as NY, so I stay away from the most crowded areas and put a white tank top on to go into the water. My best friend lives near Long Branch and she goes topless and wears a thong, too.

I have to agree with Carly about thongs in New Jersey. While I don't wear one myself I've seen them on the beaches quite frequently over the years and never seen anyone be hassled. There is an area of Margate Beach known as "thong beach", the area around Lucy the Elephant which is a large wooden attraction. Thongs are prevalent there and I see them most every time I go to Atlantic City and never a problem there either. Same in Wildwood.
I've found topfree to be not quite as openly practiced as thongs, but topfree is practiced in NJ as well. I go topfree in Atlantic City all the time and a few other beaches too. Lifeguards, especially in Atlantic City, do not bother you unless something forces them to. You just should be a little respectful and don't flaunt yourself. I do things that prevent beach neighbors from going to the lifeguard and complaining. Some day when I get time I'll post a topic about things that I've learned to do. It's been years since I've gotten any kind of hassle in Atlantic City. They know they get Europeans there and understand that. The two most important are try to stay away from children as best you can and don't flaunt yourself.

Re: New Jersey and Thong Bikinis
There are two things that I know work. One is to just stay away from the crowd, and the other is to park yourself right near the lifeguard. If he/she asks you to cover up, then just move somewhere else.
Those who are new to topfreedom are always worried. Those of us who have done it for years know that hassles are rare. I've never been asked to cover up. The touchy thing is whether to walk around topless. I try to gauge the crowd. When alone I often go to the gay section, which families with children (the ones most likely to complain) usually avoid.

Re: New Jersey and Thong Bikinis
Thats why the lifeguards should have a policy if anyone comes around complaining about topfree beachgoers or those in thongs they just shrug their shoulders and say theres nothing they can do about it, instead of always feeling compelled to respond to every complaint even when they know its silly and theres nothing going on. They should have the guts to tell these people that the topfree/thongers areint doing anything wrong and these other people are just gonna have to deal with them or leave.

It's been years since I've been asked to cover up. I think it shows that America is making some topfree progress too, albeit slow progress. At one time there was more of a threat of getting a ticket. Most places around here are not that harsh anymore. We just need to be respectful and avoid upsetting beach neighbors.
As for walking around topless, I've done it but not very often and agree that "touchy" is the right word. We might be doing well with our immediate beach neighbors but somewhere in the distance can be someone that will make a hassle from 50 yards away. Somebody that can't even see us when we are sitting or lying down. My fear is that you know how things can be in America - reactions are often blown out of proportion. They won't just tell you to sit down. It could end in them outlawing all topfreedom at that particular beach, even when nobody complains. I generally won't take that risk. To me the thought of ruining it for everybody who wants to be topfree outweighs any added comfort we get from walking around topless.

Not infrequently in situations like that the complainer who was offended was watching with binoculars.
