Let's not overstate things ... there are probably few if anybody jailed for possession of a single marijuana cigarette, and I know of no woman tossed in the clink simply and only for being topfree. Cited or fined, yes, but not imprisoned.
And while Americans are more prudish than most in social mores, there are many cultures that think we are a bit too libertine (South Pacific, some parts of Asia and Africa) and some that think we are downright immoral (Middle East and Central Asia).

I hear what you are saying but I also think that Bill Maher put it best when he said that he's all for cultural relativity but some things are not just different, some are better and worse.
Some countries force women to cover up head to toe under pain of death or beating, and consider women the property of either their husband or father. We allow women to choose to wear bikinis or to cover up and to freely enter the workplace and come and go as we please. Not different, BETTER how we do it.
Some countries allow topfreedom for women and have many public clearly designated clothing optional use and others that are not, so everyone can go where they are comfortable. This country has some beaches that are available for topfree or nude use and they are few and far between, on most other beaches I would be arrested for showing my boobs, one for even wearing a thong bottom. In that case we are WORSE.

Elizabeth,
Possession of less than eight ounces of marijuana is punishable by up to 12 months in jail in my state, and it does happen. You can also go to jail for disorderly conduct, the charge most often used when police find out indecent exposure doesn't cover (so to speak) bare breasts.
The only hyperbole included in my statement was when I said the rest of the world. I probably should have said the rest of the western world.

newdguy, i agree with pretty much everything you said, but i doubt anyone is in jail for possession of one joint. you can roll a LOT of joints with eight ounces. and if you get caught with that much, they will probably charge you with trafficing too, which adds to the sentence. around here, if you get caught with one joint, the cop will probably just take it from you and tell you to go home. it happened to a buddy of mine.

You can, but has anybody ever been? The only cases I've ever heard of involved citations and even the (few) court cases that came of them the threatened punishment was fines, not jail.

It seems thongs are totally illegal in VA and SC; especially VA. Beach and Myrtle Beach but accepted in much of NC beaches throughout the OBX and south. Being discreet seems to be the best rule for us even though we've had no problems on lots of NC beaches.

I just got back from Cape Hatteras. There is a lifeguarded beach just about a quarter mile north of the lighthouse. Right where the lighthouse used to be before it was moved. I asked the lifeguard about thongs. She said that thongs were fine to wear on the beach. She even volunteered that topless was O.K. too! I asked her if she saw many people wearing thongs there and she said she did see quite a few. I told her I usually wore a thong at Ocracoke and she replied that you probably would see as many thongs here at the lighthouse beach as you would on Ocracoke! She also said that even if anyone complained they would not or could not do anything as thongs and topless were legal. I took several long walks on the beach with only my thong on. There were numerous other beach walkers, so dozens of people saw what I had on. I always smiled and said hi to people I passed. They all returned the greeting. Even those who saw me from behind going one way on the beach were very friendly when I saw them face to face going the other way. I spend quite a bit of time looking for shells near where I was set up so I had the occasion to see and speak to a lot of people as they passed by. The age range was from kids to seniors older than me! I hope that my wearing thongs on public beaches and demonstrating that people who wear thongs are just normal people will give others the courage to wear them also. I did notice one guy who was walking with his wife and kids, after he saw me in a thong, pulled his long shorts off and continued walking in a brief speedo swimsuit!

well its official! I found a contact from the city of Hampton, VA and this was the reply i got...
"Kelly:
Currently, Hampton does not have a city code section that prohibits such apparel. Hampton Code Section 23-12, "Indecent Exposure", prohibits obscene displays of one's person or private parts, but does not specifically address the buttocks."
Well finally one official answer for somewhere!! I know where im gonna go in a few weeks! Well i would wear a thong there anyway but now i can be a little more bold about it without having to worry about any potential tickets :-P

I was at the Grandview Nature preserve this afternoon and must say that it is a very beautiful, private and natural piece of beach. The beach goes on forever it seems, taking about an hout to walk to the end. This is a truly a treasure to find in the middle of a busy city, a respite from all the noise, people and cars. I do not know what authorities would say about thong bikinis, but I had a wonderful walk in mine today!
