Ahoy, all,
I just wanted to shed a little light on Maryland. I don't know too much about the beaches on the Eastern Shore, largely because they're farther away, but I go fairly often to Sandy Point, and I've never had a problem stringing, at least not from the beach patrol. The only problem I've encountered is with some of the Latin American folks coming by to go fishing. (I hope that doesn't sound exclusionary!) I don't know anything about attitudes toward topfreedom and thonging in Latin America, but some of these fellas appear to have some very set ideas of what is macho, because I know just a little bit of spanish to know when I'm being poked fun at.
Anyways, I haven't been down there in almost two weeks, but in the past month of my going there, usually once a week, on separate occasions I saw:
1) another guy, older gentleman, sunning in a thong,
2) a dude sporting a bikini
3) another older gentleman, at least in a thong, possibly nude -- I couldn't tell with a basic glance, and I certainly wasn't about to gawk.
4) a young lady, seemingly not far in age from myself, probably somewhere 18-22, walking up and down the beach with a friend wearing a thong. This was the first time I've seen a woman wearing a thong at Sandy Point, and I hope maybe some people noticed, and that it will encourage more of the same, from men and women.
So far, I haven't seen any women going topfree. I can't say much on that, but Sandy Point is the kind of place where you can find your own little place, and no one will bother you. I usually stay about 20 meters away from others, if there are people in the area of my usual spot, but no one's ever told me to cover up -- neither young couples, nor older couples, nor parents with children. For topfreedom, my guess would be nonchalance would probably be returned with nonchalance.

For finding out which beaches you can thong on, checkout the Beaches threads on the Thong Wearers Message Board
There are different sections for beaches where you can thong for US mainland, Canada, Caribbean, Europe etc.
With about 6,000 members it's an active board with lots of beach reports.
While the board is obviously about people who wear thongs on the beach, the beach reports do note if female members went topfree or if there were sightings of topless women.
Quite a few members of this topfree board are also members of the Thong Wearers Message Board, so while you are likely to bump into old friends and there will be a little duplication, the large number of members on the Thong Board brings a depth to the numerous beach reports.
If you have a beach where you like to thong do post your experiences on the
Thong Wearers Message Board so we can get more thongers and topfree women out at these locations.

I'll second the comments others have made about the Outer Banks, NC.
I would also add Ocean City, MD to your list. Now Ocean City is very crowded, so you will not find any pretty, solitary spots. The first time I asked the beach patrol, and they said that topfree was not legal, but thongs were. I have now worn my thong there quite a few times and never have any major problems. You will stand out, for sure, and you will attract a lot of attention. But it does appear that you are not breaking any law, and the authorities will not bother you.

I was just down at Cape Hatteras, the beach at the lighthouse, and wore my thong there all week. This is a thong friendly beach and also topfree. I would like to see more thongs there. I spent most of my time on the beach right in front of the lighthouse. It was great. I highly recommend going there to thong or go topfree with no hassles.
