The real double standard
The link below is a good reminder that the real double standard is that women (or in this case a girl) cannot be topfree where men (or in this case a boy) can.
Perhaps even more disturbing is Taylor Lautner being quoted saying he is embarassed for so many people to see him shirtless.

Re: The real double standard
Frankly, I wouldn't want a 15 year old girl to be seen topless in public, other than a designated area where her peers are also topless, such as a beach or similar locale. The reason for that is that that are just too many perverts running around.
As for a 17 year old boy being shirtless and showing off his chest, who cares?
Gender does make a difference.

Perverts dont care about gender or if the person in question is wearing a shirt or not. If its okay for a boy to be shirtless in a particular circumstance then it should be okay for a girl to be topless in that same situation.
The greater need is for both young boys and girls to be taught how to deal with encountering troublesome people and what to do weither theyre wearing a shirt or not. If they know that then thats all that matters.

Re: The real double standard
I wouldn't have let my daughter pose as Cyrus did either, but I have to question my own prejudices just the same -- especially since Miley Cyrus wasn't actually topless. The only part of her that was visible was her shoulder and upper back, or about the same as if she were wearing a strapless evening gown. No one, including me, thinks twice about their son being completely exposed to the waist.
My daughter wears tube tops, spaghetti-strap tops and bikinis that expose just as much or more than was exposed in the Cyrus picture. The difference is that's non-sexual, while the Cyrus picture and the Lautner pictures are both highly charged.

Re: The real double standard
Newdguy,
If you think that your daughter wearing tube tops, spaghetti straps, or bikinis is NOT sexual, then you haven't been watching the American media.
Pervs are going to perve out whether girls are in bikinis, burkas, or bathrobes. Treating kids differently, and impinging upon their freedoms, because of something that you can't prevent (pervent?) and is going to happen anyway seems a little iffy.
Topfreedom for all. Let's punish the pervs, not the people.
