yes Chapel Hill is very liberal, but also very politically correct. It is also home to the UNC Tarheels who won tonight in Basketball and are on to the final game. Having a great college team makes for some great parties. Hopefully there will be one Monday night.
As to if there are people not associated with the university or relying on it's presence for a livelyhood, that is rather unlikely. The school is the draw, unlike Raleigh (NC STATE) which is the State Capital or Durham (Duke) which had KING TOBACCO.

@Dear Lester,
even risking to disappoint you I must confess that Baskettball is one of the things where I put the fewest interest in (as most of the Germans I think). So I didn´t took any notice if there was a Basketball-team in Chapel Hill and what it may does (I joined some parties and got drunken on them more than one time but I don´t think they had anything to do with Basketball). Since it was spring and summer of 2002 when I was there I cared in my free time more about how to make it possible to get some sunrays for my boobs - which was not easy and not everytime succesful. But maybe that was caused by the fact that I was a stranger and this forum unfortunately didn´t exist at that time
Btw: I meant it a little bit ironically that I was wondering if there were other people than students and researchers, too. The whole environment remembered me a little bit to the medium-sized German university towns of Marburg and Gießen in Hesse - but there it is not so strange as it was in Chapel Hill during my time there.

it´s not so silly...
The first years of practizing regularly toplessness I handled it in that way, too: Until the beach bikini top on and after settling down in my spot bikini top off until leaving the beach and than bikini top on again. I think most females who´re going topless sometimes or regularly are handling it in this or a similar way.
But later I became more and more uncomfortable with wearing tops and bras in a whole and so I switched finally to the practize letting my boobs nude all the way long and wearing only a neckholder- or bandeau-top until the beach (seldom really a t-shirt) and than - off with it so soon as possible!

I live about a 5 minute walk from the beach. I wear a brief bikini over my g. I quite enjoy walking around in just a bikini, much sexier than a t shirt. The top and bottom are off as soon as I hit the sand!!!

Nicci,
2002 spring and summer was a very down year in Carolina Basketball history. If you were here now, you could not get away from it, unless you were in your room buried under a blanket, which would not have been a good choice yesterday. Yesterday it was @ 75 degrees and sunny, with a light breeze, just enough to keep from getting too warm. Unfortunately, I had to work a horse race, so I had to stay dressed  No sun for my buns.
Today we pay, thunderstorms with chance of tornadoes.

My first time topless? Let's see...
I was very self-conscious about that kind of thing back then. I had got a new bikini (I think to try to convince myself to be less, uh, bothered by that kind of thing?)--green one--and I was having a great time at the beach.
Intermission: Not long before this happened, my sister was taking a bath, and didn't lock the door. Not hearing anything in there, I barged in and...well...she wasn't happy. To see what kind of reaction I'd get, I told her I was getting the camera--she just rolled her eyes and reached for the bar of soap. I came back--still didn't get a reaction. Turned it on, still no reaction. Snapped a shot--BOY it made her mad!!! No need to get into details about the rest.
SO, back at the beach, she invited me to go up behind where everyone was. I climbed up the sandy slope, and then she ripped the bikini top off! I was startled, and sort of fell back. Guess what--I rolled down the slope, and into full view of EVERYONE.
I was so embarrassed...then I realized that it was kind of cool like that. There was so much sand in the top half that I didn't put it back on anyways--I went topless the whole day, and on the way home too! I got to liking it more and more...until now I don't wear a shirt almost ANYWHERE!
