Re: First time topless
Yes, the encouragement and insight that you and the other ladies have provided has been wonderful.
By way of a quick update, I've learned that Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas has recently opened a topfree swimming pool. This is a great breakthrough for us here in the US !!
My wife has been wanting to see Celine Dion's show at Caesar's anyway and I'm planning to take her there for a long weekend - and at least the opportunity for her to sunbathe and swim topfree. This probably won't be until next spring (which seems like an eternity) but ticket availability and weather probably won't allow anything before that. Even Las Vegas can be cool, cloudy and windy in the winter - so it will be worth the wait to make sure the weather is perfect and her experience is as enjoyable as possible.
And if she choses not to, at least she will have had a really good opportunity.
Thanks again to all of you. I know this thread is supposed to be more than a support line for husbands like me - but your comments have been much appreciated.

When I began being top-free in public with my husband, we went to a beach where there were not many others - i had a sense of privacy. Then we went to the Caribbean, St. Martin's, which was so diverse with strangers that the baring my breasts became easier. I don't think Las Vegas, with all the gawkers, would put me at ease.
For what it is worth.

Re: First time topless
Hi Sun Fun,
Thanks for sharing that with me - I definitely don't want to get in with a bunch of gawkers as my wife would be uncomfortable, too.
I really don't know what it's like at Caesar's topfree pool - because I think the whole concept is something brand new to Vegas. I was thinking (but don't know) that they had some security and that it would be mainly couples like us and maybe a few single women. I think they have three other pools at Caesar's where topfree isn't allowed.
I had been thinking about an alternate plan of going to a European beach (like Costa del Sol in Spain) where a lot of the women go topfree, but maybe the Carribean is something I should consider. You mentioned St. Martin's - do they have any good "beginner" beaches there - where there aren't too many people ?

There are lots of places, here in the states and obviously elsewhere. The French side of St. Martin is where topfree is more common, Orient Beach has developed so much that places where nudity was tolerated, it is not any longer - however Orient Beach still has a nude section. In the nude section security is great as they absolutely do not allow photographs. We have been to the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana - simply found a secluded section of beach. With the hurricanes -I am not sure of the conditions. Check out the destination section of the board.
I am more comfortable now than I was. One of my first experiences was at a beach in Big Sur, CA. We walked a mile to the beach, don't remember its name. Then walked down the beach. Not real populated, lots of top free women and nude people. We found a wind break someone made out of drift wood, and put our towel up to signal occupied. There I was totally comfortable and top free.
Another experience in CA was at San Onofre, trail 6. Rather than going where all the nude bathers are - mostly men, my husband took me to the right. Had a long section of beach to ourselves. He strategically positioned the umbrella. Off came the top.
Bottom line - remember it is her choice. Just because others are doing it, she may not be comfortable. Many of us want to be respected for our choices whether others approve or do not.

Re: First time topless
European beaches are the perfect place to start (a beach on the Costa del Sol in Spain was the first place my wife went topless). It is so normal there that nobody makes a big deal of it, except the very occasional giggle by a tourist who is not used to it, but even then they soon adjust. It's very relaxed. My understanding that St. Martin has the exact same relaxed attitude, being a French island.

Sun Fun and Brith20
Thanks to both of you. This is really great information. These are exactly the kind of leads I'm looking for now.
I'd give the California beaches a try, but when we travel there, we're always with friends and relatives and they might not be as supportive.
By the way, I can appreciate the concern about respecting my wife's decision. No need to worry about that - we've had a wonderful marriage for years with her wearing modest swim suits (even with my gentle encouragement go to bikinis and topfree). Nothing will change if she decides not to - I just want her to have the chance to go topfree in a friendly and positive atmosphere.
She's one of those many women who seem to get more beautiful every year. Lucky me !!

Re: First time topless
Hi D Kent,
since your wife has never been topfree in mixed company, public beaches may not be the best place to try it for the first time. even in europe where topfree is widely accepted it is not universally practiced, and she may feel uncomfortable joining the other side.
another option to consider is a nudist resort. nudist travel is a booming industry, i personally don't care for nudists cruises & resorts but some are very nice. a great advantage of resorts is you can expect a staff who are experienced with beginers and will gladly give your wife a gentle introduction to nudism 101. be sure to do some research not all nudist resorts are equal, check to see if clothing is an option (it usually is), this way she can take it at her own pace.
I hear Desert Shadows in Palm Springs california is very nice. next time you visit family in california you could spend a couple days there just the two of you.

Re: First time topless
Hello! The pool at Ceasar's is very nice. There is a small problem with walk-through visitors but overall it is very nice. My wife has gone topfree there and I have worn on thong on several occasions with no problem. You may want to try the Moorea Beach Club at Mandalay Bay as it requires an admission fee so discourages gawkers and the casual observer. My wife has gone topfree there and walked around without a top. Probably 70% of the women who use it go topfree as compared with 30-40% for Ceasar's.
We have also visited Desert Shadows Inn in Palm Springs for our 20th anniversary. It is comparable to any 4 star resort anywhere and is fantastic. I can not reccommend it highly enough!
Hope this helps!
Morris

Re: First time topless
Hi Annatana and Morris,
Thanks for sending along the thoughts and suggestions - they are much appreciated.
For my part, I would love to try Desert Shadows - I've been wanting to try it for a couple of years now - but it's just been kind of a dream in my mind. My only concern is that the totally nude atmosphere (even if clothing is optional) might be a little bit too much of a shock for my wife. In fact I'd be a little worried she might not even want to go once she found out what I had in mind. That's definitely a place I want to work up to in the future. But probably we need to take some small steps first.
After hearing from several folks including yoursevles on this, I'm thinking that maybe a secluded beach - rather than a more populated one might be the way to go. The idea of the Las Vegas pools (Caesars or Mandalay Bay) is still interesting - partly because she loves Vegas so much - but of course it's likely to be a little bit like a crowded beach.
I really appreciate both of you taking the time to write and share these ideas.
Happy tanning !!

Re: First time topless
Just a point Kent, I'm not sure if other ladies will agree with me, but I actually found it a bigger deal going topless for the first time than nude. Silly as it sounds, if you'd have asked be I'd have rather gone bottomless than topless, so once Mrs Kent has decided to abandon her bikini top, the bottom may not be so much of an issue. - Di
