Topfree in Yap
http://micronesiandreaming.blogspot.com/2009/01/churu-dance-please-dont-mind-tatas.html
The above link is too a informative blog about a young ladies work in Yap while a member of the Peace Corps. She discusses the time she spent there and even partcipating in their dances which requires the women to only wear grass skirts and remain topfree. She stated that it took getting use to it but was pretty comfortable with this towards the end.

Re: Topfree in Yap
We had a neighbor (an elderly woman) who was in the Peace Corps in Yap. She arranged for our island (Peaks Island, Maine) to be a sister island of Yap. Yap is more advanced with regard to topfreedom that our island is. Our deck is an exception.

Re: Topfree in Yap
Don't know about Yap, but I can testify that I didn't see anyone topfree on Peaks Island this summer.

Re: Topfree in Yap
That's a great blog -- especially the part about how she thinks priests would react if topfree women showed up at a church in the U.S.

Re: Topfree in Yap
I think it was very cool that she was open minded enough to fully partcipate in the daily life there. I am sure some peace corps workers would refuse to go topfree or even try to make the natives wear shirts. It was just too bad she felt the need to put a black bar across some of the picture in order not to offend others. If she had left the pictures uncensored her readers could see that it was not a big deal.
I think it is interesting how topfree is a part of life in Yap but they frown up on women showing their legs and or hips. In comparison to America a woman can wear the shortest of shorts and no one says a thing. However, if a mother who descretely pulls out her breast to feed a hungry infant, people are ready to run her out of town.

Re: Topfree in Yap
"National Geographic" published an article about Micronesia in 1965 or 1966. The local women were topless, wearing only a wrap-around skirt; several photos illustrated this. Will dive into my dad's old NGs to find the exact issue.
Edit: it was the May 1967 issue. Oh well, I was only one year out!

Re: Topfree in Yap
I am too young to remember 1967, but I do remember being in the 7th grade when national georgraphic published an article on Micronesia around 1987 or 1988. I remember some of the students checking out the magazine and the girls saying ewww at the pictures. The female teacher told the class that if we lived somewhere hot and humid we would not want to wear anything on top too.

It can get very hot humid here :-0 But I guess that was a "teachable" moment to make our 12 and 13 year minds realize that there is nothing dirty with our bodies.
