How can we improve this forum????
Over the past few weeks, there have been a large proportion of posts / topics on this forum that have "wound people up".
Whether this is Codskips comments or the likes of FCL it seems to be causing annoyance.
Love him or hate him, Codskip does have SOME valid points and is fairly honest and open about his thoughts etc - I think that ever since cabbagepatch took over the forum (he was amusing mostly) there have been a few tryers wanting to be him...
We have lost a lot of posters who I am sure read this forum on a regular basis (Me, Roey, Yoey, Lodgey etc etc)and the banter and opinions were generally better before.
What can we do to take this forum back to "the good old days?"
I feel that everyone in the PS does have a right to post but should we set rules and guidelines to eliminate stupidity?
Any thoughts would be good and maybe the mods will be able to use peoples opinions to help it improve!

Re: How can we improve this forum????
JRD. The clue is in the title I think. Imagine what we would talk about if we all met for a beer in the Grapes or somewhere like that. What would we talk about? Who would we talk about? (those not present I guess!) We would discuss other sports, especially PNE and the mighty Tangerines, and we would discuss other leagues, but our focus would be on PS past, present and future.

Re: How can we improve this forum????
First and foremost a `forum` is a public area for open discussion (see OED) so anyone who `signs up` has a right to say what they want (within the rules) (is calling someone a tw*t or a tosser within the rules?)
The fact that someone makes a deliberate effort to sign up in order to post means they have made a conscious decision that they wish to make their views known.
A I read the forum, there are hundreds of topics on which people can comment, so people can choose whether a topic interests them or not (eg I chose not to enter the FCL/Codskip bun fight! or the leg side wides one as i have no views either way on the subjects )
However, to state that in the `good old days` the banter and opinions were better because certain people contributed is somewhat subjective!
In addition how do you define stupidity? One person`s opinion is another person`s stupidity? Are you advocating some form of censorship? Who makes that decision? What gives them the right to make that decision?
What was and is interesting to you may not be to others, and maybe the forum reflects/mirrors the PS itself?
Originally both were smaller with less clubs/people involved, now both are larger with more clubs/people involved and that means a wider diversity of interests on which people wish to comment. What is of interest to that small group of people you identified may not be of any interest to the newer members....ditto in reverse. ( Maybe thats why they post topics which are of interest to them, because your topics were actually not that interesting (perish the thought!)
However, i`ll go back to my original definition of a `forum ` as taken from the Oxford English Dict.....its an open area for discussion. The key word there is open !!!!

Re: How can we improve this forum????
Weety, I can agree that we have a forum and all involved in this are entitled to their own views or opinions.
What we get now on a more regular basis is people signing up and not being prepared to openly say who they are and which club they represent - They do this soley to enter posts that get peoples backs up - FCL is a prime example of this IMO - He seems to want to wind up Codskip and other members about the quality of the FCL - This is not a FCL board it is a PS one.
I think that the banter was better in the old days and owing to the fact that you clearly state the definition of a forum i am well within my rights to have that opinion.
At the moment, all this board is doing is alienating the sensible poster due to the immaturity of some. If we can take out the stupid comments that come on a regular basis I feel that we will find the board improving and we will get some excellent discussions taking place like we used to.
I have mentiond a few names that do not post on here but I am sure that there are many many more that dont because of the issues.
This used to be a great place to get everyones views but now all we hear are the views of a minority.
I am not saying that these people should not get a chance to post but using a brain before typing may help everyone.

Re: How can we improve this forum????
I Have always been of the opinion that if you would not say something to that persons face then do not type it here.
The Internet and Forums especially allow people to sit at home in a darkened room and slag people off / wind them up because they are protected behind a keyboard and screen.
Most people on here know who each others are and im sure would have no problem talking to each other in the REAL World, however the recent frequent postings by "Cyber-Warriors" seem to be causing more issues than reasonable debate

Re: How can we improve this forum???? ....
JRD
Put that way I would agree, the spat between FCL and others is somewhat puerile and somewhat strange to have generated 6o+ posts......However, again I would ask how do you define stupid? I remember about 4/5 weeks ago a discussion about the rights and wrongs of the current eligibility rules applying to the Crabtree Cup. The points of issue were highlighted by messers Hardiker and Hankin playing against St Joe`s in the final as the rules allowed. There were some decent arguments for and against changing the rules, then suddenly we had the personal insults flying in (now removed I see)
Thats how I would describe stupid!!!!!
We`ve had good debates about new clubs coming into the league, leg side wides, whether teams should be able to play the same players on 2 consecutive days, even the weather..........? We get the old ones (Blackpool) ressurrected and we get some that generate little or no debate......
But again what`s important to someone in the Premier league is not always important to someone in league 3 or 5 and ditto what`s important to someone in South Shore is not always important to someone in White Coppice....
I do agree with you to some degree there are new postings from people who appear to be nothing more than wind up merchants (fin diesal?) and as Alex says you should be able to talk to people direct...maybe its down to the administrator? Maybe every subscriber should have to log who the real person behind the user name, is with the administrator.......?

Totally agree. I'm sure that this will eliminate much of the non-sensical abuse on the forum. As Weety says, the opinions of all, however far from your own opinion, are as relevant as the next mans.

Re: How can we improve this forum????
Firstly, an open apology for the recent FCL stuff. I never intended it to go on so long and if any credit is due to FCLForever it should be for his ability to annoy and invoke a response!
However, I always stand by what I post and like Alex, say what I would say to someones face. I'd hope that opposition skippers who I've encountered would say that I play fair, do my best to be accommodating and generally follow the ethics and spirit of the game. Sure, I've had my odd moment, but I don't bear any malice to anyone. And the same goes on here.
I know some people on here absolutely can't stand me, some find my views a little forthright. But with the exception of the recent shenanigans, the points I've raised I genuinely believe in. I'm not always right, but I try to give an honest opinion, hopefully with some form of backup.
So, in short, apologies to anyone who feels I've rubbed them up the wrong way.
Back to how we make the forum better... well, you could carve it up into more sections, but sometimes that detracts as you end up searching forever for what interests you. And you can't rely on people putting stuff in the right place. I guess it does allow the mods to move threads though, if they see fit. There's been loads of posts recently about rules, but noone actually posted them in the rule thread and noone really moaned.
I guess its a bit like the telly, sometimes theres stuff on you don't want to see. So.... don't watch it.
I'm going to try and be a bit more responsible in what I get involved in - hopefully that will cut down on some of the "rubbish". But likewise, if I do want to reply to something, I retain the right to do so, thats what a forums all about. If you don't like it, just ignore it! There's certain threads I read then I think, I've nothing to contribute so then I don't actively follow it.
It's about personal choice. As long as noone is bullying, breaking the law, etc. they should really be able to say what they want... IMHO
Oh, ignore Fin Diesel.... it's just my "captain elect" and he couldn't wind his own watch up!

Re: How can we improve this forum????
JRD - Good topic! Been a while since the forum itself has been up for discussion.
quote: Maybe every subscriber should have to log who the real person behind the user name, is with the administrator.......?
I could do this... but would take a long time to go through. When we set this forum up several years ago, this could have been done quite easily as there were only a few posters. I could look into getting it so they require admin permission before they can post (am sure its a simple job) and will get back to you. Would people like this to be done? Or is this an invasion of privacy? thoughts...
Also, as I am currently unemployed until I jet off to NZ, I have a couple of weeks with not an awful lot to do. So I'm thinking of doing some spring cleaning and deleting a lot of the old posts. Certianly ones from prior to the 2009 season. If there are any that people want kept, please let me know.
I may reorganise the main board into divisional sub-sections (like we currently have for predict-a-match and rule changes) as well as an area for general league info and maybe a gossip board? Again any ideas people have let me know.
Speaking of predict a match... I'll wipe most of it, but leave the sub forum in case people want to do it again in 2010.
Anything I've missed, or new ideas get in touch via PM, or message me on facebook or something.
Cheers guys
Rob Dingle
