Rule Changes for 2010
I attended the PS meeting last night and there were a number of rule changes that have been proposed etc for 2010.
Please, if you are a player, then get onto your committee and support these rule changes - especially the Meyler Cup ones as this will benefit our cricket.
Amongst the rule changes that will be voted on at the PS AGM are:-
1. Meyler Cup to use fielding circles (min 4 fielders within 30 yrds of bat at all times)
2. Meyler Cup to use first class leg side wide rule of anything passing outside the pads down the legside is a wide
3. Points for a win will be increased to 9 plus bowling points a tie will be increased to 5 plus bonus points
Obviously the third rule affects all clubs but please don't allow the Meyler Cup rules to be thrown out by votes of clubs not competing in the competition. If you support them then get onto your clubs' committee and get that message passed on.
Any opinions?

Re: Rule Changes for 2010
I`m presuming there were more rule changes put forward than just that?
Having said that they make sense to me...however, i know one subscriber to this forum who thinks fielding circles are artificial and unnecessary (can you get them in on some grounds if a wicket is on the end of a square-just a thought)
The big Question is actually who goes along to the AGM? do they truly reflect the views of the playing members of their club?

Re: Rule Changes for 2010
Hence why its important for the players to ensure that their reps are representing their desires rather than the reps personal opinion. I've been at meetings where it is quite obvious that the rep has no interest in what the players at his club want (usually because it's about a 100 years since he last played). They will just vote for status quo.
One the points front I've offered this thought previously. The points per win, bonus points etc would very rarely have an effect on league placings over a full season. What they can do is make a potentially dull fixture more interesting. It is the nature of the game that sometimes the stronger team has to give the weaker one a sniff of a win in order to squeeze more points out of the game.

Re: Rule Changes for 2010
Yes to all three for me. The fielding ring is a must in my opinion, I don't think the argument that some grounds are too small holds much water, when all the fielders go out on the edge at Fulwood it becomes a case of '1' or '6'. Having to keep 4 men inside the ring gives the opportunity for the batsman to target the area without a boundary rider, and makes the fielding captain think more carefully about his tactics.
The adjustment to the points system is also necessary, it would mean a 'maximum' win would give 12 points, whilst a 'maximum' loss would still give 6 points. This gives a fairer differential between winning and losing. A 'maximum' tie would give 8 points (3 bowling points + 5 'match' points), two thirds of the maximum that would be available for a win. Also, the proposed amendment would leave the points system for incomplete games as it is, meaning that anything from 2 to 8 points can be gained, depending on bonus points.
These adjustments make the points system more symmetrical, and, in my opinion, fairer.

Lurch: "The points per win, bonus points etc would very rarely have an effect on league placings over a full season"
Look at the final Premier Division table of 2006, Norcross and Whittingham's records in particular...

Re: Rule Changes for 2010
Lurch your post is the exact reason that I have posted.
We (the players) need to encourage our clubs to be voting for what 'WE' want to play with.
If you use this forum and you know who your league rep is you will know whether they fall into the category that Lurch has identified. We must use some common sense and perhaps look to make a sensible voting decision instead of an ill-informed judgement of what was best in the heady days of 1965!
On another note if anyone fancies being a league rep then get on it!!! The AGM is 7 Dec. Dave Meloy and I will be making it the PS Committee Christmas do and will be enjoying a train journey to Kirkham and a few drinks to make the hours fly-by! If you fancy joining us then why not volunteer yourself to be your new club rep!

I would have hoped that if you were playing in the Meyler Cup you would not choose to play on a track on the end of your square!!!.
Just done a quick google earth scan and think that the smaller grounds (longridge, TC, great Ecc etc) will still fit the 30 yard in straight so if you are on the edge you would be outside the ring. Its going to be fun setting some fields!
I think, as Rich has eluded to, there are definite merits for the fielding circles and it brings in some rules to make skippers think more. Personally I have got used to fielding circles whilst playing in the Lancs Knockout - the only thing that we need to make sure on is that the umps are watching out for it too!!!

Re: Rule Changes for 2010
All very sensible postings.....can`t disagree with anything said to date! As a sometimes league rep for my club I do find the `what if...` and `ah but` brigade annoyingly negative (then again I have to fight that within my own club)The key to bringing in any change is to get people to believe that what you are proposing is more worthwhile than what they already have. Otherwise they won`t let go, and remember there are no irrational people, people behave rationally from their own point of view......its just that we do`nt share their rationality

Re: Rule Changes for 2010
I think the changes in the cup will only make the competition stronger. Giving the batsmen more freedom in the later stages and making it more challenging for the bowlers/captains.
Adding more value for a win just makes sense, the team who wins the most games should then win the league.
P.S. Jam - The fielding markers do fit down at chipping road...just about!
