Sunday Cricket

WLD for one are looking to enter a Sunday team next season. However, this would effectively be a 3rd team.

20/20 has been considered, but could you imagine what that would mean when players that aren't selected for a next to bottom 5th division side come up against 5 Vernons 1st team players! I could imagine all scoring records could be broken along with enthusiastic but less talented players will for the beautiful game.

We want to play cricket, but it should really be against players of a similar level to make it enjoyable!

Therefore thought needs to be put into the Sunday leagues for next season. We will need to call on players that play on a Saturday to make up the numbers, but we also need to give players a game that have not been selected or are unable to play on a Saturday, plus juniors not quite up to the standard of league cricket.

I am also aware of the call for (usually unmarried players) of any standard that also wish to play Saturday and Sunday, which currently doesn't exist, unless under the age of 21. But get a 21year-old Northern League 1st team player against a 5th division or less PS player where is the fun?

I propose to the forum which I feel I can get as a proposal from WLD to the league that a 3rd Sunday Division is formed without a league table where games are arranged on a friendly basis. i.e. the game you play on the day is played to win, but there is no league, but there is an organisation of regular fixtures for such teams.

I would imagine such a league would attract much support for promoting cricket to all and an ideal development situation for younger and less talented cricketers. (and before you say it such as myself)

I mentioned the unmarried/unattached players that want to play Saturday and Sunday, I meant to add that there should also be an open Sunday division that anyone can play in under the rules of the PS and as a league.

If teams want to arrange Sunday friendlies thats entirely up to them but I'm not sure how a friendly league would work. Wouldn't there have to be some kind of structure for it to meet the definition of being a league?

Not sure the PS would get behind anything that wasn't of a structure where everyone plays each other in an organised timetabled manner.

We might be entering a Sunday team next year. It's getting too hard to put four teams out on a Saturday so one my have to move to the next day.

There's currently 23 sunday teams, I'd like to see three or four Regionalised Groups, maybe along a Preston/Fylde/Chorley basis, playing home and away and then the winners playing semis and a final? Maybe it could be the top 2 in each division playing quarter finals?

If there were 7 teams in a group, that'd be a minimum of 12 games, 14 for the finalists, one more if quarter finals were used.

I think that would be fairer and maybe give it a more competitive edge, especially if it added a bit of Fylde v Preston v Chorley edge

Totally agree with you CodSkip, sounds like a great idea and would be really fun to have regional finals etc

Agreed Codskip, more logic to your proposal than EOW's effort.

Unfortunately the league didn't think so. There was opposition to regionalising the divisions.

Apparently, all 23 or so teams will go into one league, but you'll only play 12 games? There'll then be some kind of play offs.

Not sure how that will work but it's put me off entering a team.

There should have been play-offs this year in my opinion..top two from each division playing in semi finals. SSCC for the undisputed crown. emoticon

It's a mystery to me Cobes, given that the league look like regionalising Div5 (and maybe a new Div6) in the saturday comp.

Apparently the Sunday sides declined this option.

Pity really, I reckon that regionalising the sunday comp, with play-offs and a final would have been really good.

I wanted to put a side in, mainly of youngsters, but the thought of cramming them all into three cars and travelling off to the back of beyond is a bit offputting. If it were more localised, I'd have more chance of roping some parents in to help out.

Couldnt agree more with you Codhead emoticon ...there have been a fair few occasions this yr at SSCC where we have had no cars to take our youngsters, therefore getting a few parents helping out last minute. BAC/EE Preston comes to mind. I dont know who would have gone against the play-off format at our club, because to be fair we thought with 2 games to go there was a playoff. emoticon
