posticon Ignition problem - please help!

Hi there,
I have a 1975, 1300 Beetle called molly. She has been running with a lack of power for some time now and I can't figure why...

1) I have replaced all spark plugs, dist cap, points, leads, coil, condesner

2) cleaned and rebuilt carb.

The problem is that she lacks power and keeps back firing. Even when I disconnect 2 of the leads from the distributor the engine doesn't change. These leads spart at dist end, and and spark plug end. We have checked the compression and it is approx 9 on all 4 cylinders.

Please help, as I even got an RAC guy out who was savy with beetles and he checked all I had replaced, even tweaked the timing... but no difference.

Any ideas?

On your compression test, I hope you meant "90" PSI and not "9" as noted. Here is what the shop manual says for that:
CYLINDER COMPRESSION*
    From AUG 1967: 114 - 142 PSI New, Not Less Than 100 PSI w/wear
    From AUG 1971: 107 - 135 PSI New, Not less than 85 PSI w/wear
*Maximum difference between cylinders = 28 PSI

If yours isn't at least 85 PSI, pop off the valve covers and check valve clearances.
If your compression IS good, something else comes to mind.

I have seen where the distributor is 180 degrees out, which will make it act similar to what you are saying. This can happen if the distributor was repaired and the bottom drive was put on wrong; or if your distributor doesn't fit all the way down, it can jump a half turn.

Only other thing that comes to mind is a vacuum leak on the intake manifold. Spots to check are the gaskets at each head, rubber o-rings with clamps on each end of the center "T" shaped piece of manifold or below the carb. I was taught a trick of spraying Choke and Carb Cleaner at each of the locations while the motor is running. If it starts running WORSE when sprayed, THAT is the place. You see, Carb Cleaner is not combustible and the motor will run crappy if you feed it any.

Let me know if any of this works.
