YESSSS I need HELP

I have an AWESOME 97 jetta. love the car but lately it's having some major issues. We've been trial and erroring with this car for too long now and nothing is helping. I honestly don't know what to do to fix it, obviously I know. What it does. Some days it won't even start. Lately though it's main thing is cutting out while I'm driving. It'll just no more power, and sometimes I lose everything brakes, lights the whole 9. Then of course it won't start again unless you let it sit for a bit. the other thing it does whenit goes to cut out which is what it's been doing lately is that it'll die slowly but as you giv eit gas instead of go it makes it stop and slow down. Until it dies of course. Then again you have to wait a bit for it to start back up. We changed the wires, pluds, distrubutor cap, fuel pump, engine speed sensor. I don't know what else to do...... i use dry gas as i'm int he north east. this problem seems worse when i's wet out, and especially today as it's snowing and there's a lot of crap on the road fo it to drive through. Ideas? Suggestions? HELP PLS!!!
Thank you!!!

One of your symptoms, the part about "giving it gas makes it slow down and die, etc.," is usually related to a fuel feed problem... not getting fuel volume to the engine.

I am not esp. familiar w/Jettas, but I know engine theory. Assuming this is fuel injected, and you say you replaced the fuel pump (in the gas tank?).

Have you tried the fuel filter(s)? Some cars have just one filter, others might have 2. If you have a stopped up filter (sometimes water will do it... all depends).. your car might run better at slow speeds; but worse at higher speeds or when you "gas it." The fuel system can only deliver a little bit of fuel when there is a problem. If a filter is plugged up, sometimes letting is set, will let fuel seep through, enough to get it started again.

You might have multiple problems, but you need to be sure your fuel delivery is up to snuff.... good pump, filter(s), line (not smashed), etc.

Here in the South, Autozone (chain) stores will hook up a computer code reader for free if you are getting a check engine light. Some will tell you if you have a bad sensor, cables, etc. You might give that some consideration.

Feel free to write back and let us know or ask more questions, offer more info.

Well..... I did replace the fuel pump. I haven't done the fuel filter yet. I just replaced the ingition coil pack. I poked around talkin to some garages and the one who ahs seen my car once or twice mentioned there had been a recall on the ignition coil pack and that it would cause those sorts of things. I'm sayin it's replaced and good. I've changed so much on that car.
I did take it to Auto Zone because after we fussed with that fuel pump for about the 3rd time the egine check light came on. Read P0440 indiciating the cap hadn't been shut tightly... But I know that's not the case and it's probably sensing we'd been messing with the fuel pump and pressures and such...
now the wuestion is how do I get the light to go out? Already tried undoing the battery for awhile.

Re: YESSSS I need HELP-Resetting lite

Resetting check engine light can be done with the code analyzer. I had to go to 2 Autozones before I found anybody smart enough to do it. 1st one said it couldn't be done (dumb).
Disconnecting battery usually does NOT do it.
So if the Autozone guy says "NO," go to a different Autozone or talk to the manager. It CAN be done!

re: Fuel Filter.
Better check your receipts real close. Usually, for fuel feed problems, it is the first thing that should be replaced. Would hate to have you chasing after other things and overlook that. It is probably the cheapest thing on the list.

I'm here tot ell you it IS the cheapest thing on the list. I've already tracked down a fuel pump and engine speed sensor i know trust me. I guess I'm just not excite dbout jackin the thing up and crawlin in snow and mud to get under the car to change it is all.... I have one. Well 2 actually. But anyhow.... I think I might go hit this Import auto shop at lunch tomorrow. I honestly don't like Autozones very much. I've tried utilizing them on more than one occasion and their staff is ummmm.... well anything less than helpful or knowledgeable to be diplomatic about it. All they'd have to do is reset it. I mean really....

Babe - you've got all the classic signs of major electrical feldercarb!

Having done Electronics in the NAVY for twenty years (specifically - RADAR Transmitters), and now working on RV's for a living, I'll give you a tip that might simplify and help track down your issue(s).

NEVER TRUST THE POWER SOURCE!

You need to check from your battery to the alternator with a meter for a full twelve point something volts (whatever you read when you go from one side of the battery to the other. It may be 12.5, it might be 12.43 - but whatever it is make sure it matches).

Next do the same to the run connector of the key switch.

If that's good - check for it at the ignition module, or distributor (whichever you have).

I guarantee you this - SOMEWHERE you have a crusty connector or a bad wire!
