What brand of electronic ignition are you trying to convert to?

If you have 3 wires, instead of the normal "1-wire" for points, there should be a "black box" that the wires run to.

Is this something you bought used? emoticon

I am going to graciously bow out of this one, then. Don't want to tell no lies. Was thinking that you might have had an aftermarket unit or something. emoticon

Normally an electronic distributor has two wires - signal from the pickups inside it. Some have an extra ground wire to ensure ground connectivety.

The module will have a power source wire (+12V), a ground (possibly through the mounting screws, maybe a wire as well), two signal wires to the distributor, and an output wire to the coil.

Electronic distributors with coil packs built in often have only a power wire for 12 volts, and high-voltage leads for your plugs - but I don't know if VW uses anything like that.

If it's a Robt Bosch system, you can probably download a schemo (wire diagram) from them, or by looking it up on the autozone do it yourself info pages.

*AZ has online manuals with wiring info for most things
