Need Head Work, Suggestions?
My single port valve guides need to be replaced but I'm afraid a shop will break the cooling fins.
Would appreciate suggestion for a local Memphis machinist who can do this reasonably or any other suggestions.
Thanks,
Mitch

Re: Need Head Work, Suggestions?
I heard about a guy downtown who has been doing ACVW for years - old German fella.
I'm looking for a good shop myself and will find him if he's still in the biz and fill you in.

Re: Need Head Work, Suggestions?
The best directions i have (just got off the phone - DER Telefunken!) are these:
Coming south on the Singleton Parkway take a right onto AUSTIN Peay.
After three miles it becomes jackson avenue.
You will see the sheering-plough company on the way, it's a marker! Right after that there is a viaduct you go over, and it is the third business on the right.
Should be a whole herd of VW's around it!
THIS is the guy you want. He is an old Deutche man, and has an accent. He's good, from everything I have been told.
That is where I will take mine.
If he can be found - he has been doing this for years and is the very best in Memphis for it.

Re: Need Head Work, Suggestions?
I checked on it today - the shop looks like it is closed.
But I did get in touch with "Walker's Engine Service" and they are checking on someone who does good work and specialises on thes cases locally.
The old guy may still be around, but not public anymore. I don't know.
I'll have more info on monday or tuesday. I won't let an original case be align-bored by someone doing it for the first time!

Re: Need Head Work, Suggestions?
I still don't have a name, but yes - the shop is still open, and is very highly recommended.
The directions above were wrong! I talked to Sandy Walker today, and he told me that there is another bridge farther down, and the VW shop is "Right on the corner by the redlight".
So it is still there, but it's just past the SECOND bridge, not the first, on Jackson as you go southwest from the two o'clock position of I-240 (looking at 240 as a big circle around Memphis).
I'll take a first hand look on my way home tomorrow.

Re: Need Head Work, Suggestions?
Thanks for the updates! I dont write all the time but I am watching.
I've had Sandy do machine work on Ford stuff before and he does a great job and definately knows his stuff on domestic engines. I recommend him for US stuff that anyone needs done.
That second bridge is also where Colco (woodwork shop) and a salvage yard is located. I'm sure Sandy is talking about the little place just past there on the north side of Jackson right by where all those cars are fenced in.
Thanks for all the footwork on this!

It is. The name of the place is simply "IMPORT AUTO" and list a bunch of German makes.

Re: Need Head Work, Suggestions?
I took the heads in today at lunch.
The owner/father is currently visiting Germany. The son's name is Manfred and seems genuinely nice, helpful, honest, and knowledgable.
My single port heads will be completely rebuilt (with new valves & locks that I supplied) for $75 each and should be done within 1-2 weeks.
Thanks for the help in finding this shop!
Our bug will be on the road again in no time,
Mitch
