The Road by Cormac McCarthy
I recently picked up a book called "The Road"- it's a post-apocalyptic tale of a man traveling across the country with his son, while they scavenge for food, defend themselves from predators, and in general try to stay alive. While I have some dislikes about the presentation of the story (seems to not have been edited) and the style of writing, after reading a bit of it I was reeled in.
After a while you can't help but to empathize with the characters, hoping that soon they'd find a warm place to spend the night, find an undiscovered store of food, etc. It was really a rather frightening perspective on what the world would be like if we were ever to experience a major event such as a nuclear strike or something of that magnitude. The author managed to paint a brutal portrait of what people could be capable of when pushed to the limits.
What was most frightening of all is that with the way the people on this planet still continue to be unable and unable to resolve their differences peacefully, such an event doesn't seem as unlikely as I'd like to think. Perhaps not in our lifetimes (although, perhaps so?), but it's not that farfetched.
The reader can't help but to think we need to evolve (and improve) or we're up a creek without a paddle. I don't know if the author was trying to share a particular message, but that's what I was left with.
I wouldn't recommend this book to just anyone (especially if they are just looking for plain old entertainment like I usually am), but if you want to read something thought provoking, I'd suggest you check it out.
Here's the amazon.com link if you want to read the synopsis, see reviews, etc.
