God and Government

The question is not whether society evolves or not. Society is like a living thing. If it exists, it evolves. The question is how we structure our society and our government so that it becomes spiritually and emotionally fulfilling.
One might assume that a society which is deeply religious and deeply committed to a personal god is a highly moral society. It can be; the problem is that if those beliefs become a part of the government of that society, that government becomes corrupt, bigoted and suppressive. All our religious history teachs us that lesson. Our founding fathers knew this history lesson very well. That's why they insisted on separation of church and state.
That separation is now under direct assault. Christianity has insinuated itself into all phases of our government, and our religious conservatives want more. Under that assault, our democracy has become less democratic and less free. Belief in a personal god, a mythical giant who knows our future, answers the requests of some people but not others, controls everything and constantly interferes in human events, leads us to make irrational decisions about other humans, other life and our planet home.
It is time we once again separate religious myths from morality. It is time we take full responsibility for our own actions. We must realize that we are all under the same laws of chance, living on the same planet home, and that all our decisions must be done with loving respect for all other humans and all other life. A personal god who is on our side will not lead us to make those moral decisions. Those decisions will not be made by a religious government. That government will be corrupt.
